"Materiality of the image" online workshop

Pearson BTEC is the proud sponsor of Sam Padfield, this year's Sculpture Town Artist in Residence (STAiR) at the Harlow Art Trust. Sam is offering BTEC centres an exclusive pre-recorded online, anytime "materiality of the image" workshop.

As lines blur between the digital and physical world, Sam wants to encourage learners to think about how ob­jects become images, and how images become objects. In particular what unexpected things can happen when transitions are made from the physical to the digital and vice versa. About the workshop

This workshop is an exercise that is generative, unpredictable, and useful to all practices. The technique involves making repeated transitions between the physical and the digital. Using this circular process of mark making, image capture and post production we are interested to see what is added and what is lost when we make these transitions repeatedly.

What you'll need to take part in the workshop

  • An object - this could be a physical object or it could be a person
  • A camera
  • A printer
  • Any means of digitally manipulating the image (optional) - these could be camera filters, imaging software (such as photoshop)
  • Paint, pens, card, tape, or any materials that are available to physically alter the printed image.

About the Harlow Art Trust

In 1953 Harlow Art Trust set out with a mission to beautify the post-war new town of Harlow, Essex, by commissioning, purchasing and siting sculpture across its public spaces. The project attracted some of the greatest artists of the 20th century, including Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and Elisabeth Frink.

STAiR

Throughout the 1950s and 60s Harlow Art Trust gave artists just out of art school opportunities to create permanent public artworks for the town. To continue this legacy, we work in partnership with the Royal College of Art (RCA) and Pearson Education to award one graduating RCA sculpture student a 12-month residency. The artist is given flexible support to continue making, exploring and developing after graduation and has the opportunity to run workshops related to their practice in schools, in colleges and online.

Samuel Padfield: Drive Time

On the 8th October, Sam's latest exibition, Drive Time, opens at the The Harvey Centre and Gibberd Gallery in Harlow. Samuel Padfield's dramatic intervention in the town centre explores that state of disassociation, and creates a route to Harlow's legacy of social space coupled with public art.
