This session explores different technologies in Mastering™ that help foster student engagement and learning, and get them thinking like physicists. We'll explore pre-lecture videos, dynamic study modules, Learning Catalytics, and end-of-chapter problems that help students engage with the material.
About the speaker
Sarah Formica
Sarah Formica is an Associate Professor of Physics and the Fuller E. Callaway Professorial Chair at the University of North Georgia. She has been teaching at UNG for 13 years, and has been using Mastering in her lower and upper-level physics courses for four years. Over the past decade, Sarah has modified her teaching toward more of a “flipped” approach, using methods of Just-in-Time Teaching and Peer Instruction, with great success. As she added more interactive and student-centered activities, year after year, her students performed far above average on the Force Concepts Inventory, with gains around 40%. Most recently, students in her calculus-based Physics I class scored a 55% gain on the FCI, thanks in large part to the different technologies offered through Mastering and the ease of blending these technologies with a flipped classroom approach to teaching.
