In this session, we’ll explore how teaching modeling and simulation skills can enrich introductory calculus courses by connecting calculus to real-world applications that go far beyond “word problems.” We’ll discuss how modeling and simulation skills are also extremely useful for students taking calculus into follow-on courses in the sciences. We’ll also cover how you can introduce modeling and simulation while maintaining a focus on teaching the rudiments of calculus, and without using programming or specialized software packages.
About the speaker
Professor Marcus Roper
Marcus Roper, associate professor of mathematics at UCLA, specializes in developing mathematical models inspired by physics and biology. His research interests include biological transport networks such as fungal mycelia and the microvascular system. While many of his projects are experimentally inspired, his goal is to develop new image analysis methods and to gain a better understanding of the world around us.
