Professor Mike Sullivan III, Joliet Junior College

In this session, we’ll discuss the habits of experts in various fields, the role of motivation (both intrinsic and extrinsic), and how these habits may be applied in learning mathematics. We’ll explore how in his book, Talent Is Overrated, author Geoff Colvin argues that innate talent plays less of a role in individuals considered to be experts in their field than hard work and how students and society in general use the “math talent” argument as an excuse for poor math skills.
