In this session, we explore how a majors biology auditorium of 600+ students can be gradually transformed into a more active learning environment using technologies both advanced and simple. We share how classroom response systems like Learning Catalytics are scalable to any class size and provide opportunities for in-class engagement, peer-to-peer discussion, and addressing misconceptions in real time.

Professor Brad Mehrtens, University of Illinois
Brad has served as an instructor in the School of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for 17 years, teaching large introductory courses in person each semester and online during the summer. He earned his BS in Biology from Truman State University and his MS in Microbiology from Illinois, but for the past 15 years has focused half his attention on teaching, and the other half on academic advising. At Illinois, he has been named to the List of Teachers Rated as Excellent 36 times since 2007, was the 2014 recipient of the Excellence in Undergraduate Advising Award, and is a fellow with the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning.
