The Trends in Maths and Science Study, known as “TIMSS”, is an international comparative study that assesses and compares the performance in maths and science of pupils at age 10, or Year 5 in Wales, every four years across about 60 countries. It provides internationally comparative data on pupils’ achievement in maths and science, and how their performance is related to their attitudes, gender and background. In addition, TIMSS includes questionnaires for teachers, headteachers and parents/carers, which provide a valuable perspective on teaching maths and science, and the school and home environment.

TIMSS is delivered by a National Study Centre in each participating country. Pearson, with their academic partner UCL, have been appointed as the TIMSS 2027 National Study Centre for Wales by the Welsh Government. Pearson will work with schools to deliver the study, managing the administration, processing and scoring of the TIMSS 2027 assessment, while UCL will focus on the analysis of data for the study.
We are here to support schools and pupils with their participation in TIMSS.
