Fantastic A level success at the Defence Sixth Form College

This year the students from Welbeck Defence Sixth Form College achieved excellent A level results, with 39% of all A levels being awarded A* or A grade. The College achieved 99% pass rate with 82% of those achieving A*-C.

This is an impressive achievement considering every student at the College is required to study maths to A level and 70% taking physics at A2.

100% of the students who are sponsored by one of the branches of the MOD have been successful in gaining a place on a course approved by the Defence Technical Undergraduate Scheme. Many of these are engineering type courses and are accordingly highly competitive and demand very high entry grades. On graduating, they will start their new careers by attending officer training at Dartmouth, Sandhurst or Cranwell or enter the MOD Graduate Programme.

Marc Hedouin, from Reading, achieved an impressive four A*s in maths, physics, further maths and computer science. He will study theoretical physics and applied maths at Birmingham University. On graduating, Marc will attend the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst to start his career as an army officer.

Luke Rikard, from Chinnor, achieved three A*s in maths, physics and further maths. Luke will be attending Oxford where he will study engineering before completing his initial officer training at RAF College Cranwell.

“All our students worked incredibly hard to achieve the high grades required by our partner universities for entry to their courses. We are delighted that 100% of our MOD students have been offered a place at university and wish them every success in their future careers.”

Other top performing students included Lewis Ackroyd, from Halifax, who also achieved three A*s and Ben Palmer, from Shrewsbury, who achieved two A*s and two As. Lewis will be studying computer science at Birmingham and will then join the MOD Graduate Scheme to pursue a career within the civil service. Ben will be studying aeronautics at Southampton before joining the RAF as an Air Engineer Officer.

Principal, Peter Middleton said: "All of our students have worked incredibly hard to achieve the high grades required by our partner universities for entry to their courses. We are delighted that 100% of our MOD students have been offered a place at university and wish them every success in their future careers within the MOD and beyond. I am grateful to all the staff for their tireless work in supporting our students to realise such success.”

There were also some outstanding AS level results for the Lower Sixth with two students achieving five A grades and 14 gaining four A grades.

In 2005, Pearson TQ were appointed to run Welbeck Defence Sixth College in Loughborough, which prepares 16-18 year olds students for life at university and beyond, by giving them a well-rounded curriculum that challenges and develops them academically, physically and socially.

With full boarding facilities and a capacity of 350 students, the academic programme is targeted at technical and science A-level STEM subjects.
