Apprenticeships and Training Conference

10th to 11th March 2025

Thank you for joining us this year at the Apprenticeships and Training Conference 2025.

On this page you'll find insights from the event, including a timelapse of our mural wall, take-aways from our two workshops, thoughts from the keynote panel session and more.

We asked you a question ...

"If you were Secretary of State for Education, what change would you make to apprenticeships and training, and why?"

Thank you to all of you that visited our stand to explore this question and help build our mural wall on the stand, courtesy of graphic artist Elanor Beer

  • Many of you want more flexibility and accessibility with funding, easier access to apprenticeships and more opportunities for 16-18 year olds.

  • There was a call for EPAs to be more streamlined, and for expectations to be clearer for apprentices.

  • You want greater awareness of apprenticeships in schools alongside university.

We'll continue to explore this topic - and many others - in our monthly Apprenticeships and Training Newsletter.

Opportunities and challenges in a new political landscape

As the UK navigates a new political era, the apprenticeships and training sector faces significant opportunities and complex challenges. This panel discussion brought together thought leaders, policymakers, and industry experts to explore the current state of apprenticeships and workforce development.

During this session, Freya Thomas Monk, Pearson’s Managing Director of Pearson Qualifications, emphasised the importance of drawing on data and AI in innovative ways to allow us to move towards more personalised and modular learning.

Despite a changing landscape for the sector, Freya also emphasised how important it is for the narrative to have a focus on the achievement and impact of apprenticeships.

Why choose an apprenticeship?

At this workshop, we welcomed a panel of apprentices from UK Power Networks, Amey and Pearson to share their journey, and talk about why an apprenticeship was the right choice for them.

We heard how apprenticeships provide social mobility, and tested and reinforced self-worth. The panel also discussed the importance of skills coaches, mentors, and support from your employer and line manager when undertaking an apprenticeship. Topics also covered the importance of stepping outside of your comfort zone, and the significance of having boundaries to manage work/life balance when finding time for “off the job” hours.

“Apprenticeships are transformative. Across the UK and internationally we see their impact not just for individuals but for businesses, industries and communities... and behind every successful apprentice, there is a journey.”

Fay Granville, Director of Business Development - Pearson Enterprise Learning and Skills

Bridging the gap: local skills solutions in the devolved education landscape

For our second workshop of the conference, colleagues from Yorkshire Learning Providers, Greater Manchester Colleges, and Liverpool City Region Combined Authority joined us to explore localised education.

The panel emphasised their support for devolution, recognised its inherent challenges, and the importance of investing in skills to secure growth in our communities. The discussion also explored how giving local authorities the freedom and flexibility to explore solutions that are best for them, is where the exciting things are happening with devolution. The panel suggested that more risks need to be taken – less regulation in instances where a local authority is trialling something that works for them in a more flexible setting.

“It’s absolutely vital that what we’re delivering meets the needs of the local economy and meets the needs of the people undertaking the courses so they can fill the jobs that are there."

The Apprenticeships and Training Awards 2025

At the end of the conference on 11 March, winners of the Apprenticeship and Training Awards (ATA) 2025 were announced.

This year, Pearson has sponsored the Employer Champion of the Year Award which recognises an employer that has been an advocate for apprenticeships and training, demonstrating leadership and commitment. We'd like to congratulate City of Westminster Council who won the award for this category.

Pearson TQ was also honoured to be nominated as a finalist for Training Provider of the year.
