For courses in LifespanDevelopmentA modular, manageable, meaningful survey of the life span
Revel® Discovering the Life Span provides a broad overviewof a human life, from the moment of conception through death. Utilizing aflexible, modular organization, author Robert Feldman covers the life spanchronologically and focuses on physical, cognitive, and social and personalitydevelopment within each stage of life. Feldman’s engaging and accessiblewriting style makes the material meaningful to students, and prepares them toapply what they’re learning about development to their personal and futureprofessional lives. The 5th Edition more prominentlyhighlights the impact of culture on development and places more emphasis on theapplication of multiple perspectives when studying development.
Revel empowers students to actively participate in learning. More than adigital textbook, Revel delivers an engaging blend of author content, media, and assessment. With Revel, students read and practice in one continuousexperience — anytime, anywhere, on any device.
A modular approach makes lifespan development manageable and meaningful
- Author Robert Feldman uses a modular approach to optimize student learning. Each chapter is divided into three modules, and each module, in turn, is divided into several smaller sections to break the material into smaller and more manageable chunks. In addition, this modular approach offers instructors more flexibility in how they assign text material, enabling them to easily emphasize their preferred theoretical or topical approach to lifespan development.
- The fifth edition includes integrated videos and media content throughout, allowing students to explore topics more deeply at the point of relevancy. Revel makes the content come alive as students respond to “Myth or Truth” and “Fun Facts and a Lie” interactives. Each chapter also includes at least one “Trending Topic” feature, which explores cutting-edge research or current events. Highly engaging interactives encourage student participation. Interactive scenarios invite students into “choose
your own path”–typeactivities. Other interactives lead them through how a health-careprofessional, counselor, teacher, or parent might react to a specificdevelopmental situation or solve a problem. Students can also explore interactivefigures using drag-and-drop and predictive graphing tools.
- Each chapter includes a Thinking About the Data prompt, which encourages the student to think about what is behind the data they see in graphs and tables using a data-driven
Social Exploreractivity in Revel. Finally, a set of carefully curated videos builds on text content, exploring developmental psychology from a variety of perspectives, including adeeper look at diversity and the latest in neuroscience.
- Revel also offers the ability for students to assess their content mastery by taking multiple-choice quizzes that offer instant feedback and by participating in a variety of writing assignments, such as peer-reviewed questions and autograded assignments.
Student-focused content and pedagogical tools boostunderstanding and retention
- Chapter-opening prologues tell the story of an individual who is at the developmental stage covered by the chapter. The material in the prologue sets the stage for the chapter, and the prologue is revisited at the end of the chapter when the physical, cognitive, and social and personality aspects are integrated.
- Module-opening vignettes describe an individual or situation that is relevant to the basic developmental issues being addressed in the module.
- Learning objectives at the beginning of every subsection clearly specify what students are expected to master after reading and studying the material.
- Cultural Dimensions sections incorporated into the text highlight issues relevant to today’s multicultural society. Topics discussed include about preschools around the world, gay and lesbian relationships, the marketing of cigarettes to the less advantaged, and race, gender, and ethnic differences in life expectancy.
- Development in Your Life features present information on specific uses that can be derived from research conducted by developmental investigators. Previously titled “Becoming an Informed Consumer of Development,” these features provide concrete information on how to encourage children to become more physically active and on planning and living a good retirement.
- Keyed to the text’s learning objectives, Review, Check, and Apply sections at the end of each module give students opportunities to revisit key content, boosting retention of what they’ve learned.
- “From the Perspective of...” questions throughout the text show the applicability of the material to a variety of professions — including education, nursing, social work, and health care.
- A running glossary helps students stay on top of key terms, which are defined in the margins of the page on which they are presented.
- End-of-chapter integrative material offers students opportunities to synthesize all that they’ve learned before moving on. At the end of each chapter, the prologue is recapped and addressed from the three domains of physical, cognitive, and social and personality development. In addition, questions about the prologue are posed from the perspective of people such as parents, nurses, and educators.
New and updated material keeps the text current andengaging
- NEW - A stronger emphasis on culture throughout the 5th Edition emphasizes the important impact of culture on development.

- UPDATED - Putting It All Together chapter summaries have been redesigned to more closely link to chapter content.
- NEW - Engaging chapter-opening photos represent the content to follow.
- UPDATED - From Research to Practice boxes, many new to the 5th Edition, describe current developmental research or research issues, applied to everyday problems.
- NEW - The 5th Edition offers expanded and new coverage of advances in areas such as behavioral genetics, brain development, evolutionary perspectives, and cross-cultural approaches to development.
