Welcome back. For this problem, we'd like to determine the number of pairs of candidates in each of the following elections, and here we have an election with 10 candidates and 50 voters. As a reminder, we have this formula to help us determine the number of pairs of candidates. The number of pairs will be equal to the number of candidates times the number of candidates minus 1 divided by 2. As you can see, we don't actually need the number of voters, so we can cross out that extra information. Because there are 10 candidates, N is equal to 10 here. So let's plug that in. We get that the number of pairs is equal to 10 times 10 minus 1 divided by 2. This is 10 x 9 divided by 2, which is 90 divided by 2, which is 45. So there are 45 pairs of candidates. Another option, if you don't want to use the formula, is to give each candidate a name. You can even do something as simple as calling them A, B, C, and so on and so forth. You take your list of candidates and pair the first candidate. With everyone on the list. Then you pair the 2nd candidate with everyone on the list below them, and the 3rd candidate with everyone on the list below them, and so on and so forth, until you're pairing up your last two candidates. Then you can count all of your pairs. No matter which method you use, you will get 45 pairs. Though I will say with more candidates, using the formula may be quicker and easier. Great work.
