Spotlight on curriculum change: Problem solving in GCSE maths

Overview: With problem solving a consistent feature of both the current curriculum and draft consultation for first teaching in 2029, this engaging session will consider how we support students by understanding what problem solving in mathematics means, how we can recognise it in the classroom and how we can help students become more confident in applying their knowledge in a variety of ways. The session will provide an update on Pearson's ongoing research across qualifications, teaching and learning. We’ll explore how this research is shaping the development of future mathematics qualifications, including how problem solving and mathematical reasoning are assessed in our exams. We’ll also discuss practical approaches teachers can use now to develop students’ confidence and ability to apply mathematics in meaningful contexts, while considering how assessments are designed to support students in demonstrating what they know and can do.
