Within MyLegalExperience students will play multiple legal roles. This not only adds variety and supports increased student engagement, but also ensures that MyLegalExperience will appeal to your students whatever their future career plans may be.
Authentic client problems
Each simulation begins with an authentic client problem and is supported by a wide variety of case documents, such as witness statements, that students work through to identify the legal issues raised. This enhances the sense of realism and helps students develop the important skill of identifying relevant issues from a range of information.
Video and audio are used throughout to bring the legal problem in the simulations to life. This makes for a highly engaging learning environment and caters for different learning styles.
Legal skills development
MyLegalExperience gives multiple opportunities for your students to put their legal skills into practice in a realistic context via the Applying Legal Advice activity. Example activities include:
- Drafting client letters of advice
- Drawing up contractual terms or official documents
- Preparing presentations
- Writing submissions to Court
This written work could form the basis of a formative assessment piece as desired by a lecturer, or could be included in students’ portfolios as evidence of skills development.
Students can also access a model answer with annotated feedback against which they can compare and reflect on their own answer. In this way, skills development and feedback is reinforced throughout each simulation which promotes improvement.
Helping students apply their knowledge
Each simulation within MyLegalExperience contains 4 activities that are scaffolded so that they build up in complexity as students work through them. They've been designed to reflect how students are typically expected to approach problem questions to support students in developing this crucial skill.
Feedback and rubric
Student learning is supported throughout each activity with detailed feedback, cementing knowledge and understanding. Model answers and a rubric are also provided for the practical task in activity 3. This meets student demands for increased feedback without impacting upon lecturer time.
Additional learning support
A ‘Get Advice’ page is available at all times, and gives useful guidance and tips to students to help them complete the activities, and help to minimise the number of questions that students need to ask lecturers.
