British Sign Language time with Action on Hearing Loss
In times like these, it’s never been more important to find new ways of communicating and to break down barriers to make sure everyone is included. Pearson is proud to support Action on Hearing Loss's #BSLtime campaign.
Originally realeased during Deaf Awareness week (4 – 10th May 2020). Action on Hearing Loss worked with the UK’s best known sign-song performer Fletch@ to produce a series of five short videos, teaching the basics of British Sign Language (BSL). Through this fun, educational video series, you can learn to express emotions, learn useful words and phrases, right through to signing the rainbow song.

Coronavirus affects everyone, but people with deafness, hearing loss and tinnitus have their own unique challenges to overcome. Struggling to hear friends and family on the phone can be even more alienating in isolation. Not being able to understand important news updates because of live subtitling glitches or limited British Sign Language (BSL) interpretation can be frustrating and worrying. Stressful situations can make tinnitus harder to cope with. COVID-19 patients in hospital, who rely on lip-reading, face further difficulties because medical staff can’t remove their masks to communicate.
From lobbying the government and NHS England to make all public-health announcements, information and services accessible, through to providing information and tips on communicating with medical staff, working from home and maintaining hearing aids remotely, Action on Hearing Loss is rapidly adapting its services to meet the needs of all those who need us during this crisis.
