After a tricky school year for children everywhere, TV host Carol Vorderman and learning company Pearson have launched The Maths Factor Summer Adventure - a free six-week course to help children boost their confidence, enjoyment and progress in maths.
The new summer scheme is part of online maths school The Maths Factor, which was created by Carol in 2010 and has since supported more than half a million children worldwide with their maths learning during the Covid-19 lockdowns.
Speaking about the free summer initiative, Carol Vorderman said: “Every one of us is on the road to finding normality this summer; our little ones most of all. The past year has been especially destabilising for children, affecting their confidence and enjoyment in so many ways - and this includes in maths.
“So, together with Pearson, we want to make this a summer of maths adventure and most importantly, fun! I’ll be teaching children across the UK and beyond for 20 minutes, five days a week and watching their confidence and love for the subject soar over the six weeks! Nothing makes me happier than being ‘Aunty Carol’ to the nation’s children and setting them up for the best possible start come September.”
“When my 6-year-old was asked what he was looking forward to doing before returning to school, he answered: ‘Playing with his friends and maths.’ When he returned, the teachers were blown away by how fast he was at answering the questions. He loves that he can return to school being able to do the 6 times table, and has also moved up a set in his class.”
The Summer Adventure is the latest in a series of recent initiatives by Pearson and Carol Vorderman to ensure the children and families who need it most have free access to the site.
Hundreds of free memberships are being provided to families living in poverty and domestic abuse through a partnership with national charity Kids Out, and they are also working with a leading hospital so that children can enjoy The Maths Factor over the course of their stays.
Lindsay Nadin, who is Director of Primary and Direct-to-Learner services at Pearson, said: “As the world’s learning company, our support for families and educators is the top priority in everything we do. So, we are delighted to be bringing the power of maths into homes this summer alongside Carol, and ensuring that the children who most need a confidence boost can access fun maths lessons and guidance freely and easily - whether that’s through the brilliant Summer Adventure or our charity partnerships.
“Like Carol, we are 100% committed to brightening children’s learning and will continue to work together in tackling the ongoing effects of the global pandemic on education however we can.”
