EUSR Utility Excavations: Categories 1-5

Overview

This four-day course is for operatives with limited knowledge of safe detection methods of buried utility services at Category 1; for those working to safely excavate and maintain holes and trenches using a variety of tools at Category 2; for those is for operatives and supervisors with limited knowledge of safe methods to support excavations at Categories 3 and 4. Category 5 builds on the competencies developed at Categories 3 and 4 and covers hydraulic frame shaft bracing. Participants will also learn the correct assembly and safe use of trench boxes. 

This course has been developed in collaboration with major utilities construction firms and key stakeholders from across the industry.

Category 2 - Implement Safe (Digging) Excavating Practices 
Category 3 - Install, Inspect & Remove Timber Support Systems 
Category 4 - Install, Inspect & Remove Steel Support Systems 
Category 5 - Install, Inspect & Remove Proprietary Support Systems

  • Underground utility detection equipment and drawing limitations  
  • Different shoring systems 
  • Good and bad practices 
  • Choosing the correct system

  • Effects of weather and water 
  • Interpreting utility drawings and line search documents 
  • Service drawings 

Practical training 

  • Installation of shallow trench shoring (verti-shore) 
  • Installation of shallow trench (small hydraulic frame and MAP Box) 
  • Installation of small shaft braces 
  • Push and dig with two frames  
  • Push and dig exercise 
  • Demonstrate usage of cable location devices to locate utility services 
  • Reinforcing the correct use of cable avoidance tool (CAT)/use of drawings for cable location 
  • The installation of a trench box 
  • The installation of a slit trench 

 

Assessment and training

The course is delivered through classroom-based tutorials and practical training. You will be assessed through on-going practical observation and a short written theory test.  

 

Entry requirements

You must have a reasonable level of mobility and be able to lift and move loads. You must also have a good understanding of spoken and written English. Please contact us if you have any concerns in this area. 

 

Certification

EUSR photo ID card with qualification stated on back of card valid for 3 years from the date of training.
