Calling for reform of GCSE Science

We've been carrying out extensive research and working with hundreds of teachers, learners, parents & experts across the country to develop a clear view of the challenges facing GCSE science education & what is needed to address these.

As a result of this, and alongside our Curriculum and Assessment review thinking, we’re calling for change. It's evident GCSE Science must evolve to foster a sense of scientific identity, creativity and curiosity. By prioritising relevant, interesting and useful content, skills and experiences, it can become a powerful pathway to inspire learners and develop the skills needed for a STEM-focused future and life as scientifically literate citizens.

What are we calling for?

In order to thrive, scientists of the future need:

Get involved

We've hugely valued all of your feedback, and have used this to inform our call for reform.

We want to continue working with you every step of the way. Stay up-to-date with our latest news and let us know what changes you would like to see in GCSE Science.

"[We need] reduced content to ensure key areas can be taught better by teachers and can provide a better foundation or desire for post -16 studies. This content needs to be more relevant to our students and the ever changing world they live in."

"I would love to see the science curriculum modernised to better reflect a changing world and prepare students for the jobs of tomorrow. We have such an opportunity to prepare students for the complex world they step into with the analytical and critical thinking skills science promotes."

- Science teacher, Linton Village College

"[I'd like to see a] reduction of content and an increase in more engaging content like space science. We need to recognise that GCSE is trying to do two jobs - prepare students for A level study in academic science and teach the basic scientific understanding required to be a good citizen and make reasoned choices."

- Science teacher, Abbots Hill School

I'm a scientist too!

We want all students to feel like science is ‘for them’ and to inspire the next generation of scientists. To help you show your students how the skills and knowledge they’re learning in their classrooms can be relevant to their futures, we’ve spoken to a range of professionals in different (and sometimes unexpected!) careers to find out how they use science in their roles.
