Multiple Choice
In a scatterplot, what does a negative correlation between two variables mean?
A
There is no consistent linear relationship between the variables.
B
As one variable increases, the other variable tends to increase.
C
The variables are independent in all cases.
D
As one variable increases, the other variable tends to decrease.
Verified step by step guidance1
Understand that correlation measures the strength and direction of a linear relationship between two variables.
Recall that a positive correlation means that as one variable increases, the other variable tends to increase as well.
Recognize that a negative correlation means that as one variable increases, the other variable tends to decrease.
Note that 'no consistent linear relationship' corresponds to a correlation near zero, not a negative correlation.
Understand that correlation does not imply independence; variables can be dependent even with a negative correlation.
