We have a molecule mannitol, this thing of a carbon uh skeleton surrounded by these ohh groups. And as we recall from content videos, a functional group is a group of atoms in a molecule that behave in a certain distinctive way of certain distinctive chemical properties and behave in similar ways regardless of the other atoms in the molecule. So we're going to look at these O. H groups and think about which functional groups group this is. Let's look down at our answer choices. First one A says methyl groups. Well methyl groups would be C. H. Three. So that is not the correct answer. To eliminate choice. A choice B says hydroxy groups and hydroxy group. We can look at that name for a clue. We've got hydrogen and oxygen for oxygen is indeed O. H. So that is the correct label for our functional groups. Hydroxy but to be thorough we'll just keep looking down a car box. Cell group consists of a carbon double bonded to an oxygen with another O. H. Bonded to it. So that is also not the correct answer. And finally, choice D phosphate groups. Well, a phosphate group, as you can see by the fosse in here consists of a central phosphorus surrounded by four oxygen's usually with a double bond to one.
