Welcome back. Let's look at the next question. It says blank variables can be manipulated by the researcher and are thought to directly affect the blank variable. And I have choices of dependent, independent and controlled. Um I don't know about you but I sometimes find it tricky to remember which is which. And for me the best way to remember is to imagine setting up a very simple experiment. Um I like imagining one where I'm going to see does the amount of water affect plant growth. So I'm gonna imagine setting up my experiment with different plants. I'm going to make sure they have the same amount of light, the same type of soil because of those other things that might affect that also might affect growth. So I don't want them confusing my results. So these things which I'm keeping the same, I'm not varying, I'm not changing are going to be controlled variables. Now I'm looking if the amount of water will affect the plant growth. So to test that I'm going to vary the amount of water given to the different plants in my experiment. So I am manipulating this variable. I'm manipulating the amount of water given and that's going to be the independent variable because it's not dependent on the progress of the experiment, It's being set up by me so it's independent in the sense that it's not dependent on any sort of experimental process. It's me manipulating it from the beginning of the experiment. Then I'm going to measure and observe the growth of the plant. So in the course of my experiment, I will observe and measure plant growth with the different amounts of water. And obviously I saw value in this experiment I'm expecting to see that my plant growth will be affected by the amount of water I'm expecting that my plant growth will be dependent on the amount of water. So that is my dependent variable. The variable that I am observing and measuring in the course of the experiment. So when we go back to our question we see it says blank variables can be manipulated by the researcher. Well the variable manipulated by the researcher. Is this one the independent variable because I vary the amount as the experimenter. So we want independent to be our first blank. So choice B. Has independent. First. Um No other choice actually has independent. First. So if I were on a test I'd go ahead and eliminate Choice A. Which has dependent first choice C. Has controlled and choice D. Has dependent. So we know that choice be must be our answer. But in the interest of being thorough we'll just go all the way here and we know that the second blank says they're thought to directly affect the blank variable. Well the variable that's affected by the independent variable is the dependent variable. So dependent should be our second choice. Which indeed in choice B. It is the second. So we see that in choice A. That's not correct because the two correct terms are switched in choice C. They've introduced controlled variable, while neither of these are controlled because controlled, you hold the same in the experiment, and choice D. Also has controlled as a choice and is incorrect.
