In oxidation, electrons are lost; in reduction, electrons are gained. One useful mnemonic to help you remember this is OIL RIG (Oxidation Is Loss, Reduction Is Gain). LDLs deposit cholesterol in blood vessels; high LDL levels are associated with an increased risk of heart disease. It is recommended that blood levels of LDL be maintained at 100 mg/dl or less.
