Now, so recall that when it comes to an Iupac name, our first step should always be to locate the parrot chain or in other words, the longest continuous carbon chain that contains our primary functional group. And on the topic of the primary functional group. Notice here how attached to the ring in the center of this compound is a car bal or carbon double bonded to oxygen and the carbon carbon is attached to a hydrogen. This if you recall is an aldehyde functional group. And so the parent chain of this compound is going to be the longest continuous carbon chain that contains the aldehyde functional group. And on the topic of the parent chain, we can see that it is a benzene ring in the center attaching to the aldehyde itself. So in this case, we have benzene attaching to an aldehyde, which if you recall has an Iupac name of Benz aldehyde. So here our Iupac name should end in Benzal Hyde because that is the parent name of this compound.
