(b) Fiber optic cable is available in 12 km lengths. How long will it take for a signal to travel that distance assuming that the speed of light in the cable is the same as in a vacuum?

Secondly, we want to recall our equation for time, since we want to solve for how long it will take. So time is going to be equal to distance divided by speed. And so we know that we have to have units of meters so we can take our 3.5 kilometers and convert that into meters by using the conversion factor, that one kilometer is equal to 1000 m. We then divided by the speed of light, which is three times 10 to the 8th m/s. And when we are done We are going to get 1.2 times 10 to the negative fifth seconds.
