Dimensional Analysis Explained!

The source of oxygen that drives the internal combustion
engine in an automobile is air. Air is a mixture of gases, principally
N2179%2 and O2120%2. In the cylinder of an automobile
engine, nitrogen can react with oxygen to produce
nitric oxide gas, NO. As NO is emitted from the tailpipe of
the car, it can react with more oxygen to produce nitrogen
dioxide gas. (b) Both nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide are
pollutants that can lead to acid rain and global warming;
collectively, they are called “NOx” gases. In 2009, the United
States emitted an estimated 19 million tons of nitrogen dioxide
into the atmosphere. How many grams of nitrogen
dioxide is this?

The physical fitness of athletes is measured by “VO2 max,”
which is the maximum volume of oxygen consumed by an
individual during incremental exercise (for example, on a
treadmill). An average male has a VO2 max of 45 mL O2>kg
body mass/min, but a world-class male athlete can have a VO2
max reading of 88.0 mL O2>kg body mass/min. (a) Calculate
the volume of oxygen, in mL, consumed in 1 hr by an average

The Honda Insight, a hybrid electric vehicle, has an EPA gas
mileage rating of 41 mi>gal in the city. How many kilometers
can the Insight travel on the amount of gasoline that would fit
in a soda can? The volume of a soda can is 355 mL.

(a) A bumblebee flies with a ground speed of 15.2 m/s. Calculate
its speed in km/hr.

A 1/4-inch-thick lead sheet is used for protection from medi-cal X rays. If a single lead atom has a diameter 350 pm, how many atoms thick is the lead sheet?

(b) The recommended adult dose
of Elixophyllin®, a drug used to treat asthma, is 6 mg/kg of
body mass. Calculate the dose in milligrams for a 185-lb
person.
