Hello. In this problem, we are told the mechanism for the decomposition of a an adequate solution is described by the following equations. If hydro part is added to the solution, what will happen to the rate of the overall reaction? So when we put hydrochloride in the water, we form hydrochloric acid. Hydrochloric acid is a strong acid. So it associate form hydrogen ions and chloride ions. Those hydrogen ions then will react with hydroxide ions to form water. So when we look at our two step mechanism above, we see that we have hydroxide on the reacting side and then on the product side so it goes into the reaction and goes out unchanged. So the hydroxide is catalyst and we call that a catalyst, will increase the rate of reaction by lowering the activation energy. So when we add the high Drinan's, they will remove hydroxide ions and so hcl well lower the amount of hydroxide iron. And this then will reduce the rate of the reaction.
